First frost

This morning, everything was coated with crystals. We had our first frost last night.

The leaves are all falling off the trees at once.

My husband has been cutting down trees in the forest, for our wood supply in one or two years. It will take that long for the wood to be sufficiently dry to burn. These logs still need to be cut into stove sized pieces.

Just look at these gorgeous lichens, growing on one of the branches. Guess we have clean air in our rural area. Lichen is generally a sign of unpolluted air.

i had no idea that you had to plan ahead like that for the wood... i certainly take flipping on the heat for granted... it has been as low as about 45 these past mornings... and i didn't know about the lichen... i will show and tell about mine soon - i took the picture last weekend...

Your frost pictures are so lovely but I know behind it are cold days. I was complaining because it was raining here. At least you must have a nice fire going. Interesting news about lichen, I did not realize that.

We're looking at frost here too! Your photos are beautiful - love the info about the wood! I have a wood burning fireplace but buy it from someone! Have a great weekend!

Your frost pictures are beautiful, you must have been up early in the morning :) I am really ready for some cooler temps, it had been such a hot summer, but I doubt I'll feel this way in February.

I didn't know about lichens and unpolluted air, you are a wealth of information!

Your pictures are wonderful. Lichens are so pretty, I've drug home several small branches that lichen on them from other states to have them in the studio.

The pictures of the frost are so pretty. Double edged sword though...looks pretty but it causes all the pretty things to die:( Have a great weekend!

Oh, I do love that magic crystal world that you wake up to with first frost. We don't have that here and I am so happy you shared it. I didn't know that about lichen. And that huge pile of wood looks like a lot of work!

Ha even if lichen could grow here it wouldn't survive! Mexico City is the only city in Mexico with dirtier air then ours!!!! Oh but you must have such a wonderful little fearie community in your woods. Because only fearies can make lichen look as beautiful as yours is!!

Okay I admit that the frost does look pretty, but I sure don't miss the cold that goes with it!

Very nice pics, Renate. I can't believe it's time for frost already, tho we've not had any yet. I didn't know that about the lichen...very interesting. We have lichen in our woods also so that is a good sign...and these 45 acres were fields 20 years ago when we moved here!

Frost already?!? I am sitting here in shorts and a t-shirt! It's cool, but nowhere like where you live! I am just glad you have all that firewood stacked and drying... Sending warm hugs! Silke

P.S. GORGEOUS photos!!

I'm sure our first frost is not far off and now I have made a little note-to-self to make sure I take my camera out to catch it.

I love the pic of the lichen and finding that on walks through my woods!
